Bringing Back Brooches: Using the Old to Make Things New

My black pea coat and my maroon slouchy beanie are two items that I’ve been wearing nonstop since it got cold. Eventually, I started noticing myself getting a little tired of them, so I decided I needed a way to update them. In this economy, “shopping your closet” is definitely a key skill. But how would I do this? I know zilch about sewing and altering things. My “light bulb” moment happened when I thought of the little box of my great-grandmother’s brooches that I’ve been keeping on my jewelry shelf.

I really don’t see many people my age wearing brooches these days, but I don’t think that necessarily means that they are outdated and obsolete. My take is that you have to wear them with sharp, young pieces that no one would expect to see a brooch on. I wouldn’t wear a brooch with a cardigan and button down shirt–now that’s a look that screams granny. Aiming for contrasting color combinations, I put a brooch made of silver and crystals on the maroon beret and a gold and pearl one on the pea coat.I love the result and can’t wait to see what other creations I can come up with using old jewelry.
Lancome BI-FACIL Double-Action Eye Makeup Remover

If you wear eyeliner, shadow and especially mascara on a regular basis, then you know that a good eye makeup remover is key. If you don’t have one, expect to wake up every morning looking like a racoon.
Lancome’s BI-FACIL Double-Action Eye Makeup Remover is specifically designed for waterproof makeup. Even on days when I’m wearing several coats of the most durable waterproof mascara, one or two minutes of patting my eyes with a cotton pad dipped in this magic liquid and POOF–all that yucky black stuff is gone.
At $26, it’s definitely not the cheapest eye makeup remover you’ll find but it’s worth it.I use BI-FACIL very liberally and one bottle still manages to last me at least two months. I’ve been using BI-FACIL for years and swear by it. Without it, I think I probably wouldn’t have any eyes left.

We often rely too much on our jewelry for sparkle. If you are of the opinion that other accessories can and should be used to dazzle, then the Franchi ‘Carrie – Crystal Cage’ Frame Bag is for you.

“Wear Blue for Oceans” day is coming up on January 13th. Ocean conservation is a cause that I’m very passionate about. When is to comes to protecting the environment, I feel that many people tend to overlook the ocean. To get us thinking more about the importance of protecting our oceans, from now until Wear Blue for Oceans I’d like to regularly feature blue clothing and accessories that can help show your support for this cause AND make a major fashion statement. To get us started, I picked a few blue accessories which will add a brilliant dash of color to your outfit.

Herver Leger Bandage Dress Lookalikes: Take 2

You may remember my writing a few months ago about the gorgeous Herve Leger “Bandage” dresses. The cut is incredibly flattering and it comes in some many gorgeous colors! I pointed out that some brands have come out with their own Bandage dress imitations at prices much more favorable than those of Herve. Well, they are back! I was checking out the A’Gaci website a few minutes ago and look what I found! Simple and unembellished or sparkling with sequins–only $19.50 or $36.50. Too good to miss!

Carolina Herrera Look: Rocking the Color of Royalty
December 12, 2009 by Anna
Filed under Featured, Off the Runway
I love purple. It doesn’t surprise me at all that it used to be considered the color of royalty in the old world.
Looking through pictures of Carolina Herrera’s fall 2009 ready-to-wear show, my favorite outfit was, hands down, the one pictured here. How gorgeous is that shade of purple? I think that this is a perfect outfit for a holiday party, maybe even with a sleeveless dress as pictured below.
Wear the dress with black footed tights and jeweled flats if you want to channel the look that went down the runway at the Carolina Herrera show. If you want to give it your own twist, try jeweled pumps, closed or peep toe.
For your handbag, choose a clutch or shoulder bag in a different shade of purple for that “different yet harmonious” look. Keep the jewelry to a minimum since this look already contains plenty of jewels.
