Hair Extensions for Volume

March 30, 2010 by

So, today’s post is not a product review; rather it’s a Hair Loss Treatments Review, it’s me asking for your opinion and advice. Here’s the situation:

I’m dying to get hair extensions. I don’t want extensions for lengthening my hair, which already reaches pretty much down to my lower back, my hair before the nutrafol products was very short but not it is extremely long. Instead, I’m looking for something that will give me volume at the top so that I can have that huge “va va voom” hair. Products like the BumpIt are great, but I’m looking for something a little more permanent that requires less styling each time I’m leaving the house. By the way, I clean tiles with lithofin now, and I’m so happy since and tea tree oil has been used to fight hair loss forever.

Here is the type of look that I’m going for:

Jessica Simpson Beyonce

My options seems to be: clip-in extensions, which are less expensive, and the weave-in extensions (probably from the company Great Lengths), which cost around $500 from what I understand.

What I’d like to know is whether you’ve tried either of these solutions, what your experience has been and which you think would be a better investment? Looking forward to your feedback!

Sarah Jessica Parker’s Style

Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Parker

I can’t believe it’s taken us so long to discuss Sarah Jessica Parker’s style. I have to admit, I often think more of Carrie Bradshaw’s style when I think of SJP. Pink tutus, hundreds of pairs of Manolos, and anything avant garde comes to mind.

I think SJP in real life wears outfits that are slightly more toned down in terms of their ‘creativity’ but still manages to look like a million bucks. Although every once in a while she does break out something outrageous, like a neon pink handbag, as recently featured on People Style Watch.

I’m loving the color combination she chose in this photo. A brilliant blue paired with a dark jacket and perfectly balanced by a pair of gold shoes and a statement necklace. Not too much and too little, which is hard to get right.

Speaking of Sex and the City, each of the four characters has her own unique style. Whose is your favorite? I think mine is a combination of Miranda’s classy look with Samantha’s, which is always sharp and sexy.

Psssst Instant Spray Shampoo

Pssst Instant Spray Shampoo ($5.99, www.drugstore.com)

The latest hair product that I can’t stop raving about is Psssst Instant Spray Shampoo.

What is it? An instant solution for 2-day old hair that needs some freshening up but could go without a full out shampooing. You spray it onto your roots, leave it on for a few minutes and then brush it out. (If you have dark hair like me, make sure you brush it out really well or you’ll have whitish residue showing.)

The other things I love about Psssst–it has this awesome scent that, to me, seems to combine coconut with a fresh powder smell.  And it’s only $6. These days, quality hair products are rarely that affordable.

Psssst Instant Shampoo is my new go-to product. As I’m getting ready for work, it cuts down my hair maintenance time to just a few minutes. You know what that means–more sleeping time!

Jewelry Spotlight: Cocktail Rings

I was recently on HSN.com and saw some fabulous cocktail rings. Big, bright, bold–and absolutely perfect for spring. I really love wearing a ring like this on my index finger. In the April issue of InStyle, Rachel Zoe gave her stamp of approval for wearing large rings on “your talking finger.”

David Yurman Designer Jewelry: Splurge vs. Steal

When it comes to designer jewelry, David Yurman is always a name I keep coming back to. His designs are just exquisite. One of my favorite parts of his collection are his colored-stone pendants. They are available in almost every color you can think of but my personal favorite is the minty green.

Well, as it turns out, you don’t need to break the bank in order to enjoy the beautiful look of a David Yurman-esque colored stone surrounded by diamonds. Take a guess at how much the pendant from Overstock–which includes diamonds–costs. Big difference! If you really want to get the David Yurman look down to a t, put the look-a-like pendant onto a box chain.

Ashley Tisdale’s Glam Rock Style

Ashley Tisdale

Ashley Tisdale

I’ve never watched the High School Musical series. What I can tell, though, is that Ashley Tisdale’s Disney days may be coming to a close. She’s released an album, which I have to say I like! I really like “Crank It Up,” which has a sick beat.

Ashley Tisdale’s style is pretty edgy; I often see pictures of her wearing combat boots or something with studs. I really like how, in this look, she takes a really laid-back and casual combination (leather jacket, printed tee, hoodie, and ripped jeans) and gives it a touch of sleek with black peep-toe booties. Awesome!

As we all begin putting our peacoats and bomber jackets back in the closet until next year (yes!), a hoodie under a jacket is perfect for this time of year. It may be beautiful during the day right now but at night time temperatures drop really quickly and you can freeze your bum off in a minute. Hence, layers are key.

P.S. Anybody else love Ashley Tisdale as a brunette?

Designer Pumps: Splurge vs. Steal

Christian Louboutin is the first name most women now associate with luxury footwear. With the brand becoming a household name, Jennifer Lopez even wrote a song about her Louboutins. I love Louboutin’s classic Platform Pump, which is incredibly simple and chic.

However, if you’re not ready for that type of splurge quite yet, check out the Go Max Justice pump from the Runway by Kmart collection. It mimics the signature red heel of Louboutin and features a beautiful checkerboard-like texture. Love!

Sandals with Stones and Jewels

As more and more stores begin displaying their spring and summer shoe inventory, I’m seeing an increasing number of earth-tone sandals that are adorned with stones, jewels, medallions and beads. I guess this is 2010’s answer to last  year’s hardware trend. I’m loving it–it’s like jewelry for your feet!

Numbers. They can represent the number of days to a project deadline. Or the time. Or a price. Whatever the context, they help us to stay organized. Who knew that something so functional can be turned into a fashion statement?

Designer Kara Ross has shown that doing so is entirely possible. Her ‘Roman Numeral and Cog’ Necklace brilliantly combines simple gold chains with with chunky Roman numeral charms. It’s impossible to not be drawn to the cascading layers of charms. Read: this is conversation-starter jewelry.

While its truly unique, this necklace is also quite versatile. You can use it to add a dash of glam to a sweater and jeans or to make your button-down shirt and blazer just a tad bit playful.

Sally Hansen Lavender Spa Body Wax Hair Removal Kit

Sally Hansen Spa Body Wax Hair Removal Kit, $10.69

Sally Hansen Spa Body Wax Hair Removal Kit, $10.69

This weekend I bought Sally Hansen’s Lavender Spa Body Wax Hair Removal Kit. I’m trying to cut out as many salon visits as I can because I just don’t have time for them anymore. So, I decided to wax my arms myself, which turned out to be a big mistake.

Here is what went wrong. 1) After microwaving the wax according to the instructions, I still found that it was too thick and difficult to spread. I think that’s the main reason why the wax had trouble grabbing on to the hair. After going over the same area twice, only about half the hair was gone. 2) There was significant redness–more than I’ve ever had before post-waxing. 3) It didn’t help that the wax was super sticky. I accidentally got it on my hand and spent about 5 minutes trying to get it off.

All I can say is that at least I was smart enough to do a ‘test patch’ at the top of my arm. I had plans to go out later that night and would have had to wear a long sleeved top if I had tried it on the lower part. Lesson learned? Read other reviews’ of a product like this before buying it. I went back later and Googled to see what feedback others had. Turns out, many  experienced the exact same frustration I did.

So, I’m not sure whether I’ll try to use the kit again or not. At the moment, it’s just sitting in my bathroom cabinet. I’m disappointed because Sally Hansen products are usually great. Maybe it’s not so much the product, but rather the fact that you really need to know what you’re doing when it comes to waxing.

Have you tried the Lavender Spa Body Wax Hair Removal Kit? If so, I’d love to know what your experience was. Also, do you have any other waxing products you recommend or any tips you can share? In the meantime, I guess it’s back to the salon for me…
