Calvin Klein Fall 2009 Ready-to-wear: Black is the New Black

I’ve reached the conclusion that black will forever be the most versatile color there is. There is simply not other color that can be easily dressed up or down depending on the occasion you are dressing for. When shopping in this economy, black pieces seem to be an increasingly smart choice. And many designers appear to be of the same opinion. Calvin Klein is no exception.

I pulled  this look from the Calvin Klein Fall 2009 ready-to-wear line.I love the idea of throwing a feminine blazer that has ruffled details over a simple, one-shoulder LBD and then completing the look with boots, as opposed to pumps, for that urban warrior vibe.

If your office environment is not all about conservative suits, I think this outfit  would be great for work; it’s sexy and sharp without being overly revealing. This type of simple black outfit outfit is also perfect if you are always dashing straight from work to a party, dinner or other event; you can just take off the blazer, throw on some funky jewelry and maybe a scarf, and you’re ready.

Crazy for Chloe (Fall 2009 Ready to Wear Collection)

Chloe 2009 Fall 2009 Ready to Wear Collection, Photo: Marcio Madeira

Chloe–the French label always at the pinnacle of style and luxury while constantly reinventing itself and pushing the boundaries.

The outfit to the left is gorgeous, but you’re probably saying to yourself “How can I make this high fashion look wearable for my everyday life?” The answer lies in finding pieces that have a similar color palette to the Chloe outfit but with slightly tamer lines. For example, choose a blazer and top whose colors mimic the navy and light pink used by Chloe–but also have less ruffles and frills and a more form-fitting silhouette.

Think about what makes the outfit what it is. To me, what stands out the most is the combination of gold and navy, so I would definitely look for a gold belt to wear with the blazer. Adding a belt over a blazer is not something I’ve ever really experimented with, but since structure is always big in the fall, I think now is the perfect time to do so.

This post got me thinking about whether all couture is truly wearable for us common folk. After sleeping on this question, I’m ruling that yes, it is. Maybe not in its exact original form, but it is always possible to borrow an element from the runway that you love, modify it to suit your style/body shape/preferences and you’re good to go. After all, fashion is about imagination and creativity.

Fall Boots Have Arrived!!!

'Blondee' Boots ($99.95, Steve Madden)

'Blondee' Boots ($99.95, Steve Madden)

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I always get a bit sad as summer comes to an end (ok, I sound a tad melodramatic–it’s only August 11th). But one of the best things about being close to the beginning of a new season is shopping for new stuff, of course!

Anyone for whom shoe shopping is a science or simply an addiction knows that the end of the summer is the best time to get boots for fall. With the new shipments of fall products starting to hit the stores now, this is the time to snag boots in your size and preferred color. Come September, the only things left are usually in Shaquille O’Neal’s size or bright yellow with polka dots.

So, I said to myself today, “Self, let’s give our readers a peek at what we have to look forward to this fall.” Have a look at what caught my eye so far and keep an eye out for more updates in the weeks to come. The cold is coming but not all hope is lost!

Loving Lanvin for Fall 2009

Lanvin 2009 ready-to-wear collection

Lanvin 2009 ready-to-wear collection

With fall almost here, designers are back to experimenting with all kinds of rich fabrics, textures and dark colors. Mmmm.

And what better way to kick off the season than with a silk dress? Lanvin included a belted one in its Fall ready-to-wear collection. Love the capsleeves, which add a subtle, sexy touch to an appropriate-for-daytime dress.

The Antonio Melani dress below features ruched detailing at the neckline. This is perfect for fall, whose runways are currently being dominated by draped, ruched and layered fabric. The deep shade of gray just screams glam and leaves plenty of room for accessorizing with jewels and gold. For shoes, platform pumps are still the it thing, with so many great colors to choose from for next season.

I’m dreading the fall cold and lack of sun, but all the fab clothes and accessories coming our way do make up for it!
