Hair Extensions for Volume

So, today’s post is not a product review; rather, it’s me asking for your opinion and advice. Here’s the situation:

I’m dying to get hair extensions. I don’t want extensions for lengthening my hair, which already reaches pretty much down to my lower back. Instead, I’m looking for something that will give me volume at the top so that I can have that huge “va va voom” hair. Products like the BumpIt are great, but I’m looking for something a little more permanent that requires less styling each time I’m leaving the house.

Here is the type of look that I’m going for:

Jessica Simpson Beyonce

My options seems to be: clip-in extensions, which are less expensive, and the weave-in extensions (probably from the company Great Lengths), which cost around $500 from what I understand.

What I’d like to know is whether you’ve tried either of these solutions, what your experience has been and which you think would be a better investment? Looking forward to your feedback!

Frederick Fekkai Technician Color Care Mask

Frederick Fekkai Technician Color Care Mask ($35, Sephora)

Frederick Fekkai Technician Color Care Mask ($35, Sephora)

Girls who dye their hair, meet your new best friend. It is always frustrating to see your color lose its shine and vibrance as it begins to wash out, starting about a month or so after you get it dyed. The Fekkai Technician Color Care Mask is a conditioning treatment that you apply for three minutes and then rinse off. Three minutes later, your hair looks rejuvenated, feels extra soft and, most importantly, looks like you just got it dyed.

I dye my hair every 3 months and use Technician Color Care once every couple of weeks to maintain the color. I definitely notice that regular use of the product helps me get more mileage out of my color. So, while $35 may seem overpriced for a conditioner, all I have to do is figure in the money I save by not having to go to the salon for a touchup to see that Technician Color Care is definitely a good investment.

Tigi S-Factor Leave-in Papaya Moisture Spray

Tigi S-Factor Papaya Leave-In Moisture Spray ($19.99, www.folica.com)

Tigi S-Factor Papaya Leave-In Moisture Spray ($19.99, www.folica.com)

I’m not opposed to using all kinds of leave-in treatments that condition my hair, protect it from heat styling tools, etc. The problem is that so many of them smell horrible. I end up walking around for the rest of the day unable to escape the stench of the chemical cloud that seems to be following me.

Enter Tigi S-Factor Leave-in Papaya Moisture Spray, a heavenly potion whose tropical/fruity smell is to die for. My hair stylist introduced me to this product the other day, spritzing it all over my hair before he began blowdrying it. After he applied what seemed like half a bottle of the spray to my long hair, I asked him to use some more. The smell is just so yummy!

After blow drying, my hair was really soft and shiny, as if I just had a deep conditioning or glossing treatment. To think that your hair can look like that each time you dry it, no matter what type of hair you have. The spray works equally well on thin, straight hair as it does on thick curls. I’m hooked.

L’Oreal Vive Pro Shampoo & Conditioner

L'Oreal Vive Pro Nutri Gloss ShampooI’m the type that gets tired of shampoos and conditioners quite fast. After two or three uses, I run to the store to scope out any new ones that I can try. But one line of products has been a recent exception.

I’ve bought L’Oreal Vive Pro shampoo and conditioner the last five or six times that my supplies ran out.  At $4.99 a piece, that’s pretty doable. First of all, I am amazed at the detangling power of these products, which do wonders for my long, intensely knot-prone hair. After each wash, my hair looks shiny and feels incredibly soft, like I’ve just had a professional glossing treatment at a salon. loreal-paris-vive-pro-nutri-gloss-conditionerDon’t worry, no one has been left out; the line covers most hair types, including fine, damaged and curly.

Both the shampoo and the conditioner have a pleasant, refreshing smell. Plus, these fabulous concoctions are bottled in pretty pink containers–an added bonus for anyone who gets a thrill out of stocking their bathroom with girly-looking products.

Each time I opened up Vogue or perused gossip blogs for the latest pictures of party-hopping socialites (guilty pleasure galore!), I would curse my fine, straight hair.
